His compositions often rely on restrained color, allowing ridges, curves, scraped marks, and raised forms to become the central visual language. Rather than treating texture as decoration, James uses it as a structural part of each work. The result is painting with a strong physical presence—quiet from a distance, yet rich with detail and variation when viewed up close.
